Belize has been said to be a newcomer to the field of offshore jurisdictions. However, Belize fully intends to set itself up as one of the most appealing offshore jurisdictions in the Caribbean.

In 1990 the Belize IBC Act was established in order to set up itself as a modern International Financial Services centre; this Act was later modified in 2000. This Act is founded upon the form used by the British Virgin Islands. This legislation is considered to be one of the most current and attractive of its class in the region. This Act surpervises the registration, status and operation of all the IBC’s in Belize.

In order to boost the Belize IBC Act , a Trust Act was also established to make provisions for onshore and offshore trusts. This trust was well received and is said to be one of the most advanced legislation in the world.

Being fully aware that the offshore havens are often sought after to facilitate the laundering of money by corrupt persons, Belize has gone to great lengths such as setting up a Money Laundering (Prevention) Act to guarantee that its financial institutions are not being used to hide the source of unlawful funds. Belize is also an active member of the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force.
